When you realise how simple it is to make phone calls on Google Home or Google Home Mini - and all for free - you'll wonder why you're not already doing

Well, to be fair, this functionality has been available in the UK only since 7 March. But now it's finally here, what are you waiting for?

    The process is really simple:

    • Say "Okay Google, call [contact]."
    • When you've finished the call, say "Okay Google, hang up."

There is no setup required, but there are a couple of things you should note before you get started making phone calls on Google Home - and one setting you might like to change. (Also see: Best Google Home tips & tricks)

First, Google Home allows you to make free calls to UK landlines and mobile numbers, but you cannot make emergency calls, nor call premium numbers.

Second, Google Home can recognise multiple users, and upon hearing your voice will select a contact from your Google Contacts rather than that of your partner or other family member. This means if you ask it to call mum, it will call your mum and not theirs (assuming she is correctly labelled within your contacts).

Lastly, Google Home does not use your phone network to make the call, so your recipient won't know it's you calling. Open the Google Home app and go to Settings, Calls on Speakers, choose Edit under Your linked services, click Add or change phone number, then enter your mobile number.
